Reflections on Stewardship by Bill Algaze and Mickey Dorsey
Below are two reflections on Stewardship from two people on our Stewardship Ministry Team at St. Julian's. Thanks to Bill and Mickey for sharing their words of wisdom with us in this "Season of Giving Thanks" in our family of faith.
When I think about stewardship, I think about giving back to my community and taking care of the resources that God has blessed be with. The resources I am referring to are not only natural resources, but the resources of time, talent and treasure we have been provided with. Many people use the biblical account of Abraham who gave “one tenth of everything” to God to honor his particular blessing of having descendants “as numerous as the stars”. While this might be useful, I think of stewardship as an individual prayerful discernment that represents a sacrifice to God in thanksgiving for all the blessings he pours forth in our lives. What God wants is not ten percent, he wants all you have to offer spiritually, mindfully and with your heart since he knows your circumstances and how you give love. To me, this is what stewardship is about. Showing your love for all the people of God who might think differently or look differently than we do and loving them anyway. Love is a perfect description of what scripture is about. God puts in our hearts the desire to show love by the giving of gifts and the sharing of our time, talent and treasure. My hope for you is that you listen to that inner voice your hear that will tell you how to best share those gifts with this community of St. Julian’s and with the world.
Yours in Friendship and Love,
It’s funny that virtually every aspect of our lives requires our support in some form. Be it our time, talents, our money, and normally all of the above. Most of us never really stop to think that ALL that we have is a gift from God. Therefore it should come as no surprise that at some point God would ask us to share what He has given us. Ask us to graciously give back a portion of the wealth that He has provided. After all He is really only loaning it to us. It is through this loan that He is trusting in us to go forth and continue to do His work. To spread the word of His love for us.
The Peace of the Lord,
